Seafood industry has strongly and rapidly developed in recently years ranking Viet Nam third among the world’s biggest aquaculture countries (just behind China and India) and sixth in terms of seafood export value. However Viet Nam seafood industry is facing numerous challenges. To deal with such challenges and difficulties, vertical integration models in which all parties and stakeholders closely cooperate with one another and harmonize their interests to exist and develop is considered as a new chance for seafood industry.
No integration - no growth Viet Nam seafood export value reached new milestone in recent years. Passing the noticeable landmark of one billion US$, reaching US$1,478 mil. in 2000, the seafood export value of Viet Nam has rapidly increased to US$2.728 billion in 2005, US$3.358 billion in 2006 and US$3.762 billion in 2007, making Viet Nam one of ten biggest seafood exporting countries in the world. Thus far, Viet Nam seafood products have found their destination in about 140 countries and territories around the world, including such fastidious markets as Japan, EU and the U.S.
