Phu Quoc islands has been listed in the national conservation program, when it possesses an area of 16,545 hectare of coral reef and seabed. However, the seabed as living environment of Dugong -a red-listed marine animal has been partly damaged due to many exploitation methods used by local fishermen and fishing boats when they search for scallop, crab, and black coral.
The coral reef has been damaged when black coral is exploited to sell abroad. Additionally, fishing boats destruct the reef when they anchor offshore.
Local authority is now tighten their control over the activities of fishermen and fishing boats at the locality, however, the province need more technical assistance and modern equipment to ensure the effectiveness of their marine preservation plan, said Mr.Nguyen Hong Cuong, director of Kien Giang province’s department of marine management board. |
