Ngày 2 tháng 12 năm 2015, Bộ trưởng Bộ Công Thương Việt Nam và Cao ủy Thương mại EU đã ký Tuyên bố về việc chính thức kết thúc đàm phán Hiệp định Thương mại tự do giữa Việt Nam và Liên minh châu Âu (Hiệp định EVFTA). Ngày 26/6/2018, một bước đi mới của EVFTA được thống nhất. Theo đó, EVFTA được tách làm hai Hiệp định, một về thương mại và một về đầu tư. 8/2018, EU công bố chính thức văn kiện Hiệp định Thương mại (EVFTA) và Hiệp định bảo hộ đầu tư (nay có tên là EVIPA).
Ngày 30/6/2019: Việt Nam và EU chính thức ký kết EVFTA và EVIPA. Sau bước ký kết, hai Hiệp định sẽ phải trải qua quá trình phê chuẩn nội bộ ở EU và Việt Nam để có thể chính thức có hiệu lực với hai Bên
