Protecting aquaculture enviroment in the Mekong Delta
(Vietfish International, May-June/2008)
The farming area was 445,300ha, producing 365,141MT in 2000 and these figures increased to 699,200ha and 1,171,001MT in 2006, accounting for 70 percent of total aquaculture production of the whole country. However, environmental protection in the region needs greater attention.

Along with development of aquaculture industry, farming models also change rapidly from extensive farming with low stocking density using natural feed to semiintensive, intensive and high density farming using processed feed in concentrated regions, producing a volume of products for domestic consumption and export. But the application of new farming models with high stocking density, high output, energy consuming and high production costs has brought about imbalance of natural system, eco-damages and negative impacts on environment.
