Organic approach in aquaculture development in Mekong Delta
(Vietfish International, Mar-April/2008)
The Mekong Delta with a population of 17.3 million and large area of flood-plane annually produces more than 19 million MT of rice, 1.4 million MT of fruits and over 1.8 million MT of seafood for domestic consumption and export. However, aquaculture development in the region is facing difficulties, especially environmental pollution.

The Mekong Delta covering 39,747 sq.km, accounting for 12 percent of total area of Vietnam, is a typical flooded region with 90 percent of land is flooded in the water rising season. With such advantages brought by flood-plane area, in recent years, aquaculture in the Mekong Delta has undergone rapid development and growth rate. The aquaculture area was 445,300ha, producing 365,141MT in 2000 and these figures increased to 685,800ha and 983,384MT in 2007, accounting for 70 percent of total country’s aquaculture production.
